History of Grama Panchayat

Thrikkunnappuzha Panchayat is situated within the limits of Thrikkunnappuzha Village in Karthikappally Taluk of Alappuzha district. The area of the panchayat is 12.53 square kilometers. The boundaries of the panchayat are Karthikappally, Kumarapuram, and Karuvatta Panchayats to the east, the Arabian Sea to the west, Arattupuzha Panchayat to the south, and Purakkad Panchayat to the north.

Present-day Thrikkunnappuzha is a western coastal region that has been renowned since ancient times. In those days, this area was known as “Sreemoolavasam.” It is said that there existed here a port and port town where foreign merchants’ sailing ships could dock freely and load and unload goods.

This region is enriched with small ponds, canals, and streams. Since the backwaters and river remain full throughout the year, the area is water-abundant, and depending on the variation in salinity in the backwaters, the salinity in the ponds also changes at different times. Therefore, river prawns, which can thrive well in both environments and yield high returns, are suitable for fish farming in this region.

“Thrikkunnappuzha” was one of the Kerala villages that held unique importance during the flourishing period of Buddhist culture. “Sreemoolavasam” was a Buddhist monastery center that emerged in that context. Kerala history contains ample evidence that this Sreemoolavasam is indeed present-day Thrikkunnappuzha.
